'Preliminary exercise: Research and planning'

1) State the
song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

Last friday night by Katy perry

2) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

Scene 1: Actor wakes up in her bed confused as there is a man she doesn’t know in the bed

Scene 2 : Transitions to her in a bath , realising she smells from the night before

Scene 3 : Transitions to her in the garden finding the man drunkenly passed out in her garden

Scene 4 : Shot of her putting a barbecue in the oven mimicking the line “barbie’s on the barbecue” which suggests that she was getting up to mischief “last friday night”

Scene 5 : She is now in front of the mirror in the room where she finds mysterious marks on her neck. She also finds that photos and videos were posted of her and the man from the night before.

Scene 6 : Although she doesn’t remember anything she comes to terms that the night before must’ve been fun so she joins the man.

3)  Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative filmmaking but the same format can be used for any video project)

1. Medium shot of actor waking up in bed with a stranger.

2. Medium shot of her in the bath “a mess” after last night.

3. Medium shot of her putting a barbecue in the oven mimicking the line “barbie’s on the barbecue” which suggests that she was getting up to mischief “last friday night”

4. Quick transition to the man drunkenly passed out in her garden

5. Medium shot of her scrolling through the posts that were uploaded of her and the “stranger” . There is also a quick zoom in after she realises everything that’s happened

6. Last scene contains flashing lights whilst she joins the man , indicating that she’s come to terms with what has happened and the events of “last friday night” is going to happen again

4) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

C : Starts off with the main actor in a top and some
jogging bottoms. After the second scene she has an outfit change into some pink bottoms in attempt to match the lyrics “pink flamingos in the pool”. In terms of the man he stays in the same outfit ( a black top and grey jogging bottoms) as he has been passed out up until the end of the music video.

L : It was dark outside but I had tried to imitate it being morning by using lights behind the curtain. Although we were outside we used bright lighting.
The last scene included a use of flash lights enhance the energetic and vibrant feel of the night before .

A : There were two actors a boy and a girl.

M : The girl had on makeup but not too much.

P : I attempted to imitate glitter in the first scene by putting beads on the floor. I had used a laptop to show the videos and photos that were uploaded of the girl and boy the night before.

S : The first scene was in her bedroom, the second scene was in the bathroom , the third scene was in kitchen, the fourth scene was in the garden and the final scene they went back to the bedroom.

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.

Tuesday after school as both actors are able to participate rather than filming separate days.
