Summer project

1) Research: music videos

You need to write a 150-word close-textual analysis of SIX music videos that will inform your production work. The music videos you analyse are up to you but focus on a different aspect of media language for each one.

Music videos

How is narrative used in the music video and what impact does this have on the audience? Can you apply any narrative theories to the story in the music video?

Sabrina Carpenter - Taste

Narrative is used in this music video as it follows the plot of the horror movie "Death becomes her" which is an endless battle over a man after a potion that promises eternal life. In this video both girls are attempting to kill each other to win the attention of the love interest. The scene automatically starts off with Sabrina carpenter holding a knife with the intention to kill the "other woman" Jenna Ortega: the video continues on with Sabrina Carpenter being impaled and restored just like the movie. However, the video takes a turn, and the love interest dies which leaves the girls to attend his funeral. The duo ends up giggling with one another and sharing what some may call a sentimental scene as they now have a new bond. This allows their young female audience to see that women are able to solve their conflicts in the end.

Olivia Rodrigo - Obsessed

Camerawork

This music video starts off with a medium shot of two women who portray her lovers' exes. Then there is a moving shot that goes towards the actor as she is singing. There is a continuous switch between close ups of the actor looking at all the woman around her and a moving shot that goes closer her singing. Then there is an extreme long shot of her singing with a lot of energy, jumping around, whilst she's performing with her band. The last scene is a long shot of her hoovering to portray the idea of literally and metaphorically cleaning up after the girlfriends that where before her.

Treatment

The song i will use is “As it was” by Harry styles it will start off with my main actor in a busy city clearly being overwhelmed and will change into them being at the barbican center or northala fields at peace. The intention of the video is to convey the feeling of nostalgia and how everyone misses a period of time in their life. The music will have a continuous upbeat vibe and start of slow and peaceful but will gradually become more and more energetic.

Statement of Intent :
The music video for Harry Styles' "As It Was" serves as a visual interpretation of the song's core themes, which include transformation, self-examination, and the intricate dynamics of human connections. The main goal is to create an enthusiastic and electric vibe.  This video crafts a narrative that not only aligns with the lyrical essence but also encourages viewers to connect with their own feelings and life experiences.

The song captures the delicate balance between reminiscence and the unavoidable process of maturation. The video opens in a lively, animated environment that symbolizes the untroubled essence of youth. This backdrop encapsulates the joy and liberation typically linked to early life experiences, mirroring the song's upbeat rhythm and spirited character. However, as the narrative unfolds, it transitions to visuals that depict solitude and reflection. This change is intended to represent the emotional burden of transformation and the periods of introspection that frequently accompany personal development.

Color is a crucial element in setting the tone throughout the video. The opening scenes are characterized by bright, vivid colors, which signify happiness and vitality. As we progress further into the story, it deliberately shifts to a more subdued colour scheme, reflecting the contemplative and at times somber dimensions of the song. This visual progression parallels the emotional odyssey, leading viewers through a range of sentiments tied to the passage of time.

Symbolism plays a vital role in our visual narrative. Mirrors emerge as a recurring theme, symbolizing self-examination and the quest for identity. Harry’s engagement with his reflection prompts a deep inquiry into how we view ourselves in contrast to how we are perceived by others. This concept resonates profoundly in a culture that often prioritises external approval, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own identities and the intricacies of self-image.
